Youth ball registration info for 2012 season

The Columbian
Published: December 26, 2011, 4:00pm

The bats, the balls and the gloves won’t be dusted off until March, but January is the month that area Little Leagues organize for the coming spring-summer season.

Below is a list of scheduled in-person registration opportunities for Little Leagues in Southwest Washington. Most, but not all, local Little Leagues now offer online registration.

A player’s league is determined by where they live. Interactive maps showing league boundaries can be found on the district and league websites listed below. An interactive online league finder is available at www.littleleaguewa.org/findyourleague.

Each league sets its own fees. Check league websites for the cost to play in 2012. Leagues usually offer discounts for families with more than one player.Little Leagues offer financial aid for those who need it.

Here is some basic information about Little League programs:

Most Little Leagues offer baseball for boys and softball for girls from T-ball (ages 4-6) through majors (age 12). Some leagues also offer Junior League (ages 13-14), Senior League (ages 15-16) and Big League (ages 17-18) for baseball and softball.

Little League’s best known age level is for players 11-12. This is the division where teams can advance to the Little League World Series in baseball and softball.

A baseball player’s Little League age for this season is how old he will be on May 1, 2012.

A softball player’s Little League age for this season is how old she will be on Jan. 1, 2012.

Little League is run by volunteers, including all local administrators, coaches and umpires.

To sign up, a player’s parent or guardian must supply the player’s birth certificate and proof of residence within the league boundary. A current utility bill is one example of proof of residence.
