VCU sinks Akron 76-75 in OT on last-second shot

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Darius Theus’ layup with 1 second left in overtime lifted Virginia Commonwealth to a 76-75 win over Akron on Thursday night for the Rams’ seventh-straight win.

Coming out of a timeout, Zeke Marshall got to the foul line and sank two, putting Akron up 75-74 with 19 seconds left in overtime. After a timeout of their own, the Rams (10-3) got the ball to Theus for his final-second winner.

In a game VCU trailed for most of, the Rams pulled even at 70-all on two Treveon Graham foul shots with 32 seconds left in regulation. The Zips (7-6) had a chance to win it, but Nikola Cvetinovic couldn’t get his attempt to fall.

After trailing by as many as 12 points early in the second half, VCU outscored Akron 38-34 in the second and 6-5 in overtime.

Bradford Burgess led VCU with 19 points, while Cvetinovic paced Akron with 21.
