Warm weather postpones start of Alumni Classic

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NHL’s old-timers will get a late start in the first major event of the Winter Classic.

The alumni game between former members of the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers has been pushed back two hours to a 3 p.m. start on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park.

The game, featuring such stars as Eric Lindros and Mark Messier, was changed because of a forecast that calls for temperatures in the 50s and sunny skies. The unseasonably warm weather Friday softened the ice.

The league will use Saturday’s game as a test run for Monday’s Winter Classic between the Flyers and Rangers.

League officials have hoped for “Buffalo snow,” where the flakes highlighted the wintery scene in the very first Classic in 2008.
