Winthrop buzzer-beater edges Gardner-Webb 60-57

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — Charles Corbin hit a 3-pointer as time expired, lifting Winthrop to a 60-57 victory over Gardner-Webb on Thursday night.

Robbie Dreher led Winthrop (10-12, 6-6 Big South Conference) with 17 points and Reggie Middleton added 15 as the Eagles defeated Gardner-Webb for the fifth consecutive meeting. They haven’t lost in Boiling Springs since the two teams began meeting as members of Division I in 2002-03.

Corbin added 11 points, and the 3-pointer he made was the only one he attempted.

Laron Buggs scored 13 points and David Brown had 12 to lead Gardner-Webb (7-17, 2-10), which lost its fourth in a row and its 13th in the last 14 games. Winthrop also beat the Runnin’ Bulldogs 63-48 on Jan. 8.

Gardner-Webb was undone by 19 turnovers, which led to 24 Winthrop points. Conversely, Winthrop’s 12 turnovers led to only seven points for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
