A Vancouver man was ticketed Monday afternoon after he crashed a car into the rear of another car whose driver stopped for a traffic light.

The collision occurred about 2 p.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of state Highway 500 approaching St. Johns Boulevard, according to a bulletin from the Washington State Patrol.

The bulletin said James P. Davenport, 22, was driving a 1997 Dodge Neon when the driver of a 2002 Chrysler ahead of him stopped for the traffic light.

The Dodge crashed into the rear of the Chrysler, driven by Donald L. Miller, 56, of Bellingham.

Miller suffered neck pain and was taken by AMR Northwest ambulance to Southwest Washington Medical Center, where he was treated and released a few hours later, a hospital employee said.

Miller’s passenger, Michael D. Miller, 28, of Portland suffered possible back pain but was not taken to a hospital.

The crash was caused by inattention and exceeding a reasonably safe speed on Davenport’s part, the bulletin said. A trooper ticketed Davenport for alleged second-degree negligent driving.

Drugs or alcohol were not involved, the bulletin said.

Rear-end collisions are by far the most common type on highways and freeways in Clark County, officials say.

Officials say rearenders also are highly preventable, if drivers will avoid following too close and drive at a speed that will allow them to stop when cars ahead stop.
