Its placid and deep-blue water belie Crater Lake’s violent past.

On Tuesday evening, geologist Dave Ramsey will reveal how the caldera at the center of Oregon’s famed national park stood as towering Mount Mazama until a massive eruption 7,700 years ago.

The Volcano Views and Brews event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Bella’s Courtyard in the Academy, 400 E. Evergreen Blvd. Happy hour begins at 5 p.m.

The event is free, and all ages are welcome.

Ramsey, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Vancouver, will describe how scientists have used high-precision echo sounding as well as a submarine to probe underwater volcanoes, lava deltas and giant landslides in Crater Lake.

Volcano Views and Brews is held on the third Tuesday of each month.
