YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A man who attacked a neighbor with a battle ax in 2009 in a Union Gap trailer park has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports 43-year-old Russell Fiske had earlier pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in Yakima County Superior Court.

Deputy prosecutor Sam Chen says the victim, who is in his 30s, was left permanently disabled and not able to work. The man suffered a skull fracture and his left cheek was almost cut off. Fiske’s defense attorney had questioned his mental capacity, which likely would have been an issue if the case had gone to trial.

In exchange for the guilty plea, the prosecutor did not ask for two more years in jail because of weapons enhancement to the charges.
