TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Trent Lockett scored 20 points and freshman Chanse Creekmur, in his first start, added a career-best 18 and short-handed Arizona State snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 71-69 victory over Washington State 71-69 on Saturday.

Klay Thompson, held out of the starting lineup for being late to a team function, scored 24 of his 28 points in the second half as the Cougars (17-10, 7-8 Pac-10). After Creekmur made one of two free throws with 5.8 seconds left, Abe Lodwick’s 3-pointer to win the game for Washington State bounced long off the rim.

The Sun Devils (10-16, 2-12), who had lost 11 straight conference games, were without seniors Ty Abbott and Rihards Kuksiks because of injuries.

Reggie Moore and DeAngelo Casto added 12 points apiece for Washington State while Lodwick scored 11.

Keala King scored 10 for Arizona State.
