What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

It’s taken 10 years for those close to Dale Earnhardt to open up about what they saw in the aftermath of lap 199 at the 2001 Daytona 500.

Ken Schrader, whose car was part of Earnhardt’s fatal wreck and was first to check on his friend, told NASCAR.com:

“Here’s the deal. When I went up to the car … I knew. I knew he was dead, yeah. I didn’t want to be the one who said ‘Dale is dead.’ ”

George Diaz of The Orlando Sentinel talked with the emergency medical technicians who were on the scene.

Diaz reported that EMT Patti Dobler reached in toward Earnhardt from the passenger door, and knew. She pulled off his right black glove and stuck it in a right pocket of his fire suit. Holding Earnhardt’s head in her hands, she closed his eyes and then put her head down and said a prayer.

“To me, he wasn’t Dale Earnhardt,” Dobler told the Orlando Sentinel. “He was somebody’s father. He was somebody’s husband.”
