3 lifts Florida Gulf Coast over Jacksonville 56-55

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Christophe Varidel made a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give Florida Gulf Coast a 56-55 win over Jacksonville on Thursday night.

The freshman’s game-winner came after Keith McDougald put the Dolphins up 55-53 with 9.2 seconds to play.

Varidel finished with nine points, all coming off 3s, as the Eagles (9-19, 6-12 Atlantic Sun Conference) were paced by Sherwood Brown with 18 points. Kevin Cantinol scored 12 points and Anthony Banks added 11 for Florida Gulf Coast, which won its third in a row and first ever over Jacksonville.

Florida Gulf Coast shot 36.5 percent from the field (23 of 65) and was just 3 of 9 from the free-throw line, but outrebounded the Dolphins 44-27. The Eagles had 19 offensive rebounds, compared to five by Jacksonville, leading to 17 second-chance points.

Ayron Hardy led the Dolphins (19-9, 13-6) with 12 points and Delwan Graham added 10.
