LONDON (AP) — A London-based studio will design the torch that will carry the Olympic flame for the 2012 Games.

The design firm headed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby has been selected by the London Olympic organizing committee to create the torch.

The torch will be carried by about 8,000 people during the 70-day Olympic torch relay across Britain next year. The flame will arrive from Greece on May 18, 2012. The relay will conclude with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron on July 27, 2012.

The torch will be unveiled in June 2011.

The designers are based in Shoreditch in the London borough of Hackney, less than four miles from the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.
