Tracks reopen after train derailment in Wash.

SEATTLE (AP) — A railroad spokesman says both sets of tracks are open Monday after a freight train derailed over the weekend and sideswiped another south of Tacoma.

BSNF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas says crews worked throughout Sunday to replace the tracks. One of the two main lines opened around 5 p.m., followed by the second at about 11:30 p.m.

Four of the 14 cars that derailed late Saturday were tankers that each contained about 15,000 gallons of lye, a chemical used as a drain cleaner and for other purposes. About 50 gallons leaked, but none spilled directly into the water. Some seeped into the sand and some were bagged in plastic by response teams.

Melonas says crews are working to remove debris from the site, and the accident is being investigated.
