SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that the San Francisco 49ers have asked permission to talk to Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson about their head coach opening.

The person confirmed the request on condition of anonymity because neither team made it public. It was first reported by ESPN.

The Niners fired Mike Singletary with one week left in the season. They have not publicly hired a general manager. Team president Jed York said that would be his first step before hiring a coach.

Jackson oversaw a vast improvement of the Raiders offense in his first season in Oakland. The Raiders more than doubled last year’s scoring output.
