Cal hires Ambrose as DBs coach

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California has hired former NFL player Ashley Ambrose as its new defensive backs coach.

Coach Jeff Tedford announced the hiring Tuesday. Ambrose will replace Al Simmons, who left to pursue other opportunities. Ambrose spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Colorado.

Ambrose was a second-round draft pick by Indianapolis in 1992. He spent 13 seasons in the NFL with the Colts, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Atlanta. He was an All-Pro in 1996 with the Bengals.

He had 42 career interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. He also posted 178 pass deflections to go with 514 tackles.
