Dr. Howard Frumkin, dean of public health at the University of Washington, will be the keynote speaker at the Aging Readiness Task Force’s free Jan. 20 workshop on healthy communities.

The workshop will be from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Red Cross Building, 605 Barnes St., at Vancouver Barracks.

Frumkin is former director of the National Center for Environmental Health at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He will discuss how the design and planning of urban and rural areas influence public health.

Frumkin has written extensively on urban sprawl and building healthy communities.

Clark County’s 60-and-older population is projected to nearly double by 2025, when experts estimate one in four residents will be 60 or older. Older adults who practice good physical, psychological and social behaviors are more likely to remain healthy, live independently and incur fewer health-related costs.

A task force was appointed to assess the county’s capacity to serve a growing number of older people. It will look at housing, transportation, healthy communities, support services and civic and social engagement as it develops a plan to prepare the county for the aging boom.

Workshop space is limited. Register at http://www.clark.wa.gov/planning/aging/ or by calling 360-397-2280, ext. 4958.
