1 + 10 + 11 = auspicious date

Calendar churns another palindrome

You might have heard, it’s a pretty big day for alumni and fans of the “O” in these parts.

Then, there’s this: Scratch one “0” from today’s date line… and you’ve got the mirror image of 1-10-2011.

Another palindrome date — the same forward as backward.

And, time for another missive from our resident numerology wizard, University of Portland electrical engineering professor Aziz Inan, who’s made quite of hobby of this.

Minus further ado, here’s an excerpt from Inan’s latest (exclamations included):

“…Notice that January 10, 2011 written as 1-10-2011 is a seven-digit palindrome date and November 2, 2011 written as 11-02-2011 is an eight-digit palindrome date! They are both valid dates and they each correspond to a single date in the whole calendar system.

It turns out this (21st) century has 38 palindrome dates total. (Twelve) of them are eight-digit palindrome dates and the other 26 are seven-digit palindrome dates. January 10, 2011 is the first seven-digit palindrome date to occur in this century.

In this century, there are only two years containing double palindrome dates. 2011 is the first one and 2021 will be the second and last one. This is why 2011 is a special year in terms of palindrome dates.

Note that the date format used by the rest of the world is day/month/year instead of month/day/year and in the day/month/year format, this year also contains double palindrome dates. (These) dates are 11 February 2011 (11-02-2011) and 1 October 2011 (1-10-2011).”

Inan expounds in an article published in the UP’s student newspaper.

He notes that in the day/month/year date format, this century also contains 38 palindrome dates total; nine of them are seven-digit and the other 29 are eight-digit palindrome dates.

To mark the twin highlights of 2011, he’s even come up with a unique T-shirt — not yet for sale, that we know of.
