BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Lorne Merthie scored a career-high 27 points to help Campbell beat Mercer 80-74 on Monday night.
Merthie scored nine points in the extra period for the Camels (9-6, 3-3 Atlantic Sun Conference), who scored the first six points of overtime to go ahead for good. Campbell led by as many as 15 points in regulation and 59-49 with 3:42 left before the Bears (4-12, 1-4) rallied, forcing overtime on a pair of free throws from Brian Mills with 0.1 second left.
But Merthie opened the overtime with a jumper just 9 seconds in, then Martell Jackson followed with a three-point play on the next possession.
Mercer got to within 75-74 on a 3-pointer from Brandon Moore with 22 seconds left, but Merthie hit four straight free throws to seal the win.
