BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Former AFL star fullback Cookie Gilchrist has died of cancer at 75.
Nephew Thomas Gilchrist says his uncle died Monday at an assisted living facility near Pittsburgh.
Gilchrist was a 251-pound bruising runner in the 1960s in the American Football League. He spent six years in the Canadian Football League before joining the Buffalo Bills of the AFL in 1962.
He spent three seasons in Buffalo, two in Denver and one in Miami. He was the league’s player of the year in 1962 with 1,096 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns.
Carlton Chester “Cookie” Gilchrist was born in Brackenridge, Pa.
