BOSTON (AP) — Boston College offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill is retiring.

The 70-year-old Tranquill made the announcement on Tuesday after spending two seasons under coach Frank Spaziani.

The Eagles were 8-5 in 2009 and 7-6 this season, which ended with a 20-13 loss to Nevada in the Fight Hunger Bowl on Sunday night.

Before coming to BC, Tranquill was quarterbacks coach of the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe in 2007.

His 48-year coaching career began in 1962 as a defensive coach at Wittenberg, where he had played quarterback. He was head coach at Navy from 1982-86. His only NFL position was as quarterbacks coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991-1993 under Bill Belichick.
