MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) — The chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court says the judicial branch of government has been coping with budget cuts just like other state agencies but he worries about how far they will go.

Chief Justice Paul de Muniz says government functions aren’t created equally, and the judicial system must be funded properly.

The McMinnville News-Register reports that de Muniz visited 27 Oregon court districts last year. He called it “truly remarkable” they have maintained services despite the cutbacks.

But de Muniz said in his “State of the Courts” address last week the courts are struggling with increased caseloads — typical when the economy is down.
