News that Brandon Roy will undergo surgery next week on both knees certainly comes as no surprise to Blazers fans, but we can’t allow the announcement to pass without expressing a little sadness.

The frustration isn’t that Roy might or might not be out for the season. It’s that we never again will get to see the player who symbolized the franchise’s turnaround from the Jail Blazers era.

Even if he eventually returns, Roy never will be the player he once was. That was already evident, but Thursday’s announcement drove the point home. And that’s a loss for all fans of good basketball.

Here’s a thought about Auburn coach Gene Chizik’s comments following the national-championship game (see Matt Calkins’ column on this page). Chizik suggested that God was on the Tigers’ side in its victory against Oregon.

In reaction, we borrow a thought from a reader’s comment at columbian.com: If God cared a wit about college football, wouldn’t he have found a way to get unbeaten Texas Christian University into the title game?
