MADRAS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a car missed a turn in Central Oregon and wound up on the railroad tracks, where it was hit by a freight train.
The Jefferson County sheriff’s office said the separate accidents before daybreak Saturday left one person dead and two injured.
None were immediately identified.
A Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman says the train was carrying empty grain cars from California to Montana and was slowing from 35-40 mph south of the county seat Madras when the crew saw the car on its side and its nose over the tracks.
Deputies say the car had gone through a field before coming to a stop on the rails, and the train came along later.
