Wood, Kenney lead Valparaiso to 78-68 victory

DETROIT (AP) — Brandon Wood scored 17 points, Matt Kenney had 16 and Valparaiso defeated Detroit 78-68 Sunday.

Ryan Broekhoff added 10 points for the Crusaders (14-5, 6-1 Horizon), who won their fourth straight and for the eighth time in nine games.

Nick Minnerath finished with career highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double, and Ray McCallum scored 16 for the Titans (10-9, 4-3).

Valparaiso took command early by hitting 13 of its first 16 shots to build an 18-point first-half lead. The Crusaders went into halftime up 39-28, and didn’t let Detroit get closer than six in the second half.

The Titans scored 29 points on free throws, but Valparaiso, which hit 15 free throws, outshot them 51.8 percent to 38 percent.
