CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Arch Coal Inc. has announced a deal to ship Wyoming coal to Asia by way of British Columbia.

The St. Louis-based company on Tuesday announced a deal with Canadian firm Ridley Terminals Inc. that will enable Arch to ship up to 2 million metric tons of coal this year and up to 2.5 million tons each year through 2015.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports the company would use a port near Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Arch operates several mines in Wyoming including the Black Thunder/Jacobs Ranch mine in the Powder River Basin, the state’s largest coal mine.

Arch announced Jan. 12 it was buying a 38 percent stake in a proposed Longview, Wash., coal export facility. The facility is under appeal amid health and climate change concerns.
