NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA says justice officials in Cyprus have dismissed a former soccer official’s claims that the 2012 European Championship was corruptly awarded to Poland and Ukraine.
UEFA says investigations found “no information or evidence” to substantiate allegations made by Spyros Marangos, a former Cyprus soccer federation treasurer.
Marangos claimed four UEFA officials took bribes of more than $13.8 million to sell tournament rights in 2007. Poland and Ukraine defeated Italy in a poll of UEFA executive committee members.
Marangos accused the European soccer authority after corruption claims surfaced about FIFA’s award of 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting rights.
UEFA says it’s still pursuing a defamation case against Marangos in Switzerland.
