VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) — Cynthia Phaneuf won the Canadian women’s figure skating title Saturday night, her first national title since she won as a 15-year-old packed full of promise back in 2004.
The 23-year-old Phaneuf, from Contrecoeur, Quebec, scored 111.55 points for her elegant free program to Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme By Paganini,” to win with 172.32 overall points.
Myriane Samson of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, fourth after the short program, scored 108.07 to move up to second with 157.82. Amelie Lacoste of Delson, Quebec, scored 100.86 to take the bronze with 151.72.
Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catharines, Ontario, and Dylan Moscovitch of Waterloo, Ontario, captured their first Canadian pairs title, winning the long program with a score of 122.90 for 187.63 overall.
Toronto’s Patrick Chan staked his claim for his fourth Canadian title. The two-time world silver medallist scored 88.78 points in the short program to eake the lead in the free program Sunday.
