PARIS (AP) — French President Nicolas Sarkozy has written to International Olympic Committee members urging their support for his country’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Annecy.

The letter obtained by The Associated Press says Annecy’s mountains are “as breathtaking in their beauty as they are challenging to even the world’s top athletes.”

On Friday, Sarkozy’s office said he would not travel to South Africa next week. Prime Minister Francois Fillon would represent France at the International Olympic Committee’s vote on Wednesday in Durban.
