Dry grass burns near Bend

BEND, Ore. (AP) -- Dry grass and brush burned east of Bend and north of Terrebonne in a busy of Fourth of July for central Oregon firefighters.

KTVZ reports a slash-pile burn got out of control and burned across a field east of Bend. Neighbors slowed it down before firefighters arrived.

Later, four small fires broke out along a four-mile stretch of Highway 97 north of Terrebonne. They may have been started by a car with mechanical problems.

The largest fire burned about 12 acres before it was controlled by Jefferson County firefighters with help from the Oregon Department or Forestry and Bureau of Land Management, including a water-dropping helicopter.
