Letter: Learn flag code out of respect

With the birthday of America being celebrated, a lot people are flying the flag.

Whatever happened to kids being taught how to respect the flag? When I was younger I was taught not only in school but by my parents. Wrapping the flag around their bodies, dragging it on the ground, stepping on it, hanging it on the ceiling, and using it for advertisements is disrespectful.

After the Fourth of July, in past years, I have found flags in the dumpster. I pull them out because our flag should never be placed in a dumpster. If it is tattered or you don’t want it anymore, it should be destroyed with some dignity by ceremonially burning it.

I love my country and what the flag represents. It really bothers me when I see all this disrespect. The problem is, most of them don’t know because no one has ever told them.

I wish newspapers would print the U.S. Flag Code each year before the Fourth of July holiday and maybe, just maybe, some will respect it a little more.
