MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins slugger Justin Morneau says his surgery to relieve a pinched nerve in his neck went well and he is hoping to rejoin the team some time in August.

Morneau had the surgery last week and has been resting ever since. He is not close to resuming baseball activities, but he did say the surgery has helped alleviate much of the numbness he was feeling in his left hand. The first baseman is still sore, but he says that is from the surgery and not the injury itself.

Twins center fielder Denard Span seems much closer to returning. Span has been out with a concussion. He will travel with the team to Chicago this week to ramp up his workouts and will be evaluated again after the All-Star break.
