Regarding Thomas Sowell’s July 5 column, “Too many take republic for granted,” I agree that casual, uninformed voting by citizens who see it as a “recreational activity” is a danger to us all. But I quite disagree with Sowell’s defense against higher taxes for the wealthy merely because they can easily “ship [their wealth] overseas electronically, or put it in tax shelters” here. Better that we strive to fix the problem rather than ignore it. Eliminating the upper income cap on payments to Social Security, ending all upper-income tax loopholes completely, and adding heavy taxes to corporations outsourcing jobs would be a good start. Tax equality should be a reality, not a dream.
