Talking Points: Vacated logic

The Columbian

They’re celebrating in the streets of Ann Arbor, Mich., today.

That’s because on Friday, the Wolverines’ string of consecutive football losses to arch-rival Ohio State ended.

That’s right. Ohio State decided to vacate all of its victories from the 2010 season, including a seventh consecutive win over Michigan.

That surely sent the folks in Michigan into a frenzy!

Wait. You mean, it didn’t? Folks in Michigan don’t care what the folks in Columbus do?

Ohio State’s decision Friday to vacate wins from the 2010 season was a ploy to keep the NCAA from adding to the Buckeyes’ self-imposed sanctions.

But vacating wins from past seasons is like someone saying, “You know, in hindsight, I really didn’t enjoy that birthday party you guys threw me last year,” even when there’s an album of photos that speak to the contrary.

Like the people in Michigan, we doubt the NCAA will be impressed with Ohio State’s move Friday.

Oh, John Daly, we’ve been there before. Of course, when we’ve been there, we didn’t wear obnoxious pants and down a case of Diet Cokes, but close enough.

Daly’s round on Friday included a 13 on the par-4 No. 4 hole at the PGA John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.

Daly’s tee shot went into thick grass off the fairway, and it took him seven shots — each advancing the ball only a few feet — and a drop to get out of the rough.

It wasn’t the worst hole in Daly’s PGA career. He once carded an 18 in the 1998 Bay Hill Invitational.

But couldn’t tournament organizers help Daly out and maybe mow that rough a little bit? I mean, it’s the John Deere Classic for crying out loud!
