Letter: Camas council reflects public concern

The Columbian
Published: July 16, 2011, 12:00am

The fireworks issue is a spark for our right of freedom of speech. I have read opinions expressed in The Columbian and unlike comments from recent transplants from other states, I believe that every citizen has a right to voice their complaint or concerns. I have also lived in great neighborhoods where the neighbors support one another but somehow on the Fourth of July battle lines are drawn. Some neighbor decides to launch fireworks that are truly illegal and near empty lots full of dry tall grass.

I have also communicated to the city council of Camas my concerns on the logic of having one of the longest duration (June 28 to July 5) of firework celebrations in the nation this year. I am appreciative of the council’s proactive response by changing the days next year, July 1 to July 4. As a citizen one has a choice not to purchase fireworks and elect officials who promote change that reflect the changes of the community, economy, and environment.
