OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Transportation Commission is proposing new fare increases for ferries.

The commission said Tuesday it wants to increase fares by 2.5 percent in October and an additional 3 percent next May. A final decision on the fares will come by the end of August, after public meetings on the issue.

Commissioners are also proposing lower fares for vehicles less than 14 feet. That category is designed to encourage the use of smaller cars to maximize ferry deck space, and the vehicles would eventually face fares that are 30 percent less than the standard fare.

Another proposal would add a fuel surcharge in case of unexpected spikes in fuel prices.
