LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico Highlands University football recruit has been arrested by police in Las Vegas, N.M., in connection with a California homicide.

The Las Vegas Optic reports that police took 22-year-old Brandon Johnson into custody Wednesday. He was recruited in the spring and had just enrolled at Highlands for a summer class.

Long Beach police spokeswoman Lisa Massacani says Johnson was the third person arrested in the June 25 death of Dajon Daniels.

An arrest warrant claims Johnson is a gang member. It says Johnson allegedly assaulted the victim as a fellow gang member shot and killed him.

Johnson won’t formally be charged until he appears in court. His extradition to California is pending.

Johnson is from Long Beach. He played for the University of Washington in 2007 and 2008.
