Central Vancouver Little League manager Terry Barnes was confident in one thing.

“They’ll forget about this by tonight,” he said. “Tomorrow morning they’ll wake up, and it will be whole new day.”

What Central Vancouver players are hoping to erase from their minds is Saturday’s 22-4 loss to North Bothell in their first game of the Washington State Little League Tournament.

They’re still alive in the double-elimination event for 11 and 12 year olds being held at Fort Vancouver Little League, and will next play on Monday, but not likely against an opponent as strong as the one they just faced.

North Bothell scored seven runs in the first inning and didn’t slow down in the second, hitting two home runs before an out was recorded. It added 10 runs in the third inning, but Central Vancouver didn’t wilt.

Shawn Craig began a third-inning rally with a double, which was followed by a single from Joshua Mulcahey, a double from Nick Simonsen, and singles from Royce Cone and Kobe Howard. The burst of offense was responsible for all four of the team’s runs. The game was called in the fourth inning because of the mercy rule.

Central Vancouver won the District 4 championship by beating a team that had beaten them earlier in the tournament. So Dawson Allen, Saturday’s starting pitcher, feels his squad is still alive.

“They beat us by a bunch the first time,” Dawson said. “And then we came back to win.”

District 6 champion Salmon Creek plays its first game Sunday at 5 p.m.

The tournament runs through July 30.
