TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a 20-year-old man has died after struggling in the north Oregon coast surf during a youth group outing.

Sgt. Greg Plummer says two Cape Lookout State Park employees and a Tillamook County sheriff’s officer pulled the young man from the surf Monday afternoon but he was pronounced dead at Tillamook County General Hospital. He was not immediately identified pending notification of relatives.

Plummer says the victim had been visiting the park with a youth group and started to struggle while playing in surf about 70 yards offshore with three other people. His companions tried to help him but grew tired themselves and lost sight of him.
