MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Some hot summer work may bring some cool winter fun for young teenagers with discounts on ski passes at Mount Ashland in southern Oregon.

A free summer camp gives 12- through 14-year-olds the chance to do some manual labor in exchange for community service credit, learning about the environment and a discount on a season ski pass.

The Mail Tribune reports the Youth Summer Service Program shuttles children from Ashland and Medford up the mountain for various kinds of work, including bike trail improvements, erosion control and picking up trash.

Organizers say the youth work crews also gain some valuable outdoors skills by the end of the four-day camp.
