ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Backup quarterback Drew Stanton is set to re-sign with the Detroit Lions.
The former Michigan State quarterback has been with the Lions since they drafted him in the second round in 2007. He started three games last season because of injuries to Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill.
Michigan State spokesman John Lewandowski, who spoke to Stanton on Wednesday night, says Stanton is set to re-sign with Detroit once teams are allowed to sign veteran free agents.
Stanton is an unrestricted free agent. Teams can talk to veteran free agents, but can’t sign them until Friday.
Teams can waive or cut players Thursday. The Lions are set to drop wide receiver Bryant Johnson, according to Johnson’s agent.
