KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — Officials in northwestern Montana say a 27-year-old Washington state man has died after his parachute failed to open while skydiving.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry says the man was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday afternoon.

Curry tells the Daily Inter Lake that the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate and an autopsy is planned in the next several days.

The man was participating in the 44th annual Lost Prairie Boogie, a skydiving event near Marion. About 250 skydivers are taking part in the 10-day event that ends Monday.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.
