Vancouver firefighters are taking to Esther Short Park in July for an all-day fundraiser to support Share, which helps area homeless people return to self-sufficiency.

The department’s largest union will host Fire in the Park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 23. The event includes competition among firefighters, a chili cook-off and performances by firefighter pipe and drum bands from throughout the Northwest.

Portland saxophonist Patrick Lamb will perform from 6 to 9 p.m.

“We are very excited to be partnering once again with the Vancouver Firefighters’ Union for Fire in the Park,” said Diane McWithey, executive director of Share. “It’s going to be a fantastic community event with activities for the whole family. Plus, money raised by the event will help the hungry and homeless in our community — it’s a win-win event.”

For $1, you can buy a tasting cup and help determine the best firehouse chili and booth and best restaurant and booth. Restaurants interested in participating in the cook-off should contact John Larson at 360-487-7308 or john.larson@cityofvancouver.us.

The event is sponsored by the Washington State Council of Firefighters, city of Vancouver and IQ Credit Union. To be a co-sponsor, call Sue Warren at 360-750-4436, ext 304. For more information, visit http://fireinthepark.com/Fire_in_the_Park/Headquarters.html.
