SEATTLE (AP) — Greg Halman played just nine games at Triple-A this season, but he apparently showed enough that the Seattle Mariners felt he was their best option to spell Franklin Gutierrez in center field.

Halman was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma late Thursday night and was in uniform for Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay. He missed 48 games in April and May after being hit by a pitch on April 10 and breaking a bone in his left hand.

Halman homered in his first at-bat back on May 29. This will be his second stint with the Mariners after playing nine games in 2010. He will be asked to give Gutierrez occasional breaks in center and may play a little left field.

Outfielder Michael Saunders, who was hitting .168, was optioned to Tacoma.
