LES GETS, France (AP) — French rider Christophe Kern counter-attacked on the final climb to win the fifth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Friday, while Bradley Wiggins of Britain retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Jason McCartney broke away at the 59-mile mark to build a lead that reached 12:30. But the American rider was reeled in about six miles from the finish.

Oliver Zaugg of Switzerland went on the attack in the final climb, but he was overtaken by Kern about a mile from the end. The French rider produced a strong effort to hold off a late charge from Alexandre Vinokourov.

On Saturday, riders have a 120-mile trek from Les Gets to Le Collet d’Allevard. The race ends on Sunday.
