The identity of the man who died in a traffic accident near Scappoose, Ore., on Saturday was not released by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday.

The man fell out of a pickup driven by Nicholas James Kay, 26, of Vancouver, who was in the Columbia County Jail on Sunday night with bail set at $5,625. He was arrested for criminal negligent homicide and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The man who died was riding in the back of the pickup, authorities said.

First responders arriving at 6:12 p.m. at the scene, on Dike Road southwest of Scappoose, found a man in his 30s lying in the road, and were unable to revive him, according to a news bulletin from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Kay was driving southbound in a white Ford pickup when the male passenger in the bed of the pickup fell out and hit the paved roadway, authorities said.

Deputies were investigating the accident, along with the Scappoose Police Department and the Oregon State Police.

Officials said more information was expected to be released this morning.
