DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Two recent high school graduates from Vale, Ore., have beat out teams from 49 other states in an annual auto skills competition in suburban Detroit.

Matt Saunders and Drew Torrey on Tuesday diagnosed and repaired each of the deliberately installed “bugs” inside a 2012 Ford F-150 pickup within the allotted 90 minutes to win the contest at the automaker’s World Headquarters in Dearborn.

The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition National Finals supplied about $12 million in scholarships and prizes and aims at filling a need for trained auto technicians.

Instructor Merle Saunders says today’s computer-savvy young people are prepared to handle challenges presented by technologically advanced cars and trucks. Merle Saunders is a retired automotive instructor at Vale High School.
