COUVA, Trinidad (AP) — Belize has beaten Montserrat 5-2 in the first qualifying match on the three-year road to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The first-leg match in a preliminary round for CONCACAF kicked off a sequence of 832 scheduled games to decide the 31 teams that teams will join host Brazil at the next World Cup.

Montserrat was the home team, but since the 202nd-ranked side does not have a venue that meets international standards, the match Wednesday night was played at Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad.

The second leg will take place in Belmopan, Belize, on Sunday, with the draw to decide the full World Cup qualifying process to be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 30.
