WA man fatally shot by deputy is identified

NAPAVINE, Wash. (AP) -- A man fatally shot by a Lewis County, Wash., sheriff's deputy has been identified.

The Lewis County coroner's office said Wednesday that 33-year-old Steven V. Peterson of Napavine died Monday from a gunshot wound to the head.

Deputy Matt McKnight is on administrative leave while the Regional Shooting Response Team investigates.

The Daily News of Longview says witnesses told investigators that Peterson tried to break into a home while armed with a knife, repeatedly plunging it into a front door and also stabbing the hood of a truck in the driveway. A police report says he refused to obey McKnight's commands, then charged at him.

Deputy Coroner Dawn Harris says Peterson's wife died about four weeks ago.
