NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Boeing has brought its new 787 passenger jet to the Charleston area for the first time.

Crowds welcomed Boeing’s newest jet as it landed before noon Monday at the Charleston International Airport and pulled into a nearby assembly plant. The plane spent time last week at the Paris Air Show and other stops in Europe.

Boeing is planning to make its 787 airliners at a new plant opening soon in North Charleston. Company officials hope to be making up to three of the jets a month by 2013.

Boeing officials say the new jet should spend much of its time at the airport and won’t be open for public tours.
