SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A Marion County sheriff’s spokesman says the owner of two malnourished horses rescued earlier this month from a 15-by-40-foot pen east of Salem, Ore., has been arrested and booked into jail.

Spokesman Don Thomson said Audra Bentley was located Monday at a motel in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie. After questioning, she was booked into the Marion County Jail for investigation of two counts of animal neglect and two counts of animal abandonment.

Mud in the pen was a foot deep and the horses had no shelter. One horse reportedly was 300 pounds underweight and the other 150 pounds too thin.

The horses were taken to Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary near Scio, Ore.
