DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander has been among the American League’s elite pitchers for most of his career. He’s taken another step forward this year.

The Detroit ace threw his second career no-hitter in May, the start of a sensational stretch that has vaulted him into the early discussion for the Cy Young Award as the season nears its midway point.

Verlander struck out a career-high 14 last weekend against Arizona. He’s 10-3 with a 2.38 ERA.

Verlander has made the dazzling look routine, taking the mound with a calmness he says helps his control. He says he’s tried to pitch methodically during the early innings to establish a good rhythm.
